Last Modified: Friday, February 11, 2011 at 7:56 p.m.Hendersonville resident Charlotte McCurdy thinks people should “pay it forward,” or turn around and do a good deed for someone else after a person does something nice for them.

McCurdy came up with a way to promote the idea and spoke with Mayor Barbara Volk, who recently signed a proclamation declaring April 28 as “Pay it Forward Day” in the city.

“I saw the movie and read the book ‘Pay it Forward’ by Catherine Ryan Hyde,” McCurdy said. “At that time I didn’t think much about it.”

Then an article was published in “Positive Impact” magazine about Charley Johnson and his decision to make Pay it Forward rubber wristbands.

“Now I want to spread the word and get it going through Hendersonville,” McCurdy said. “The pay it forward philosophy teaches you to be kind to everyone and if someone does a favor for you, you pay it forward and do a favor for someone else.”

McCurdy said that after she read the article about Johnson and what he was doing to raise awareness about returning favors, she decided to contact Volk.

“I sent the mayor an e-mail and I was very pleasantly surprised how quickly she responded,” she said. “She explained that I needed to have a proclamation to make it Pay it Forward Day.”

McCurdy also got in touch with Johnson.

“Charley put me in touch with the man who started the National Pay it Forward Day movement, Blake Beattie,” she said. “After the book and the movie, the movement really took off.”

McCurdy, who said she is generally a shy person and doesn’t make waves, wants to bring this movement to Hendersonville to promote good vibes during these hard times.

“Because of the way the economy is and people are having rough times, I thought bringing this to Hendersonville could make people’s day,” she said.

McCurdy will be joined by Volk and any local residents who want to come out at 10 a.m. on Apr. 28 at the Historic Courthouse on Main Street.

“I have ordered 200 Pay it Forward bracelets, and I hope to get the word out to as many people as possible,” she said.

People wearing the wristbands are supposed to pass them on when someone does something nice for them.

The person receiving the band then does the same thing to keep the good vibes going.

Volk said that she enjoyed meeting with McCurdy. “She really wanted to come in and explain this to me,” she said.

“She did come in, and it is such a positive thing. We need more folks who do things for others, now more than ever. I was happy to offer the proclamation to help publicize the event.”

Pay it Forward Day is celebrated the last Thursday of every April.

TAMPA – With all the problems in the world, turning on the TV and reading the newspaper can sometimes leave you depressed. To combat this, one Bay Area magazine is inspiring and encouraging people to be positive.

Charity Beck started the magazine, and ever since she can remember, she has had a camera in her hands.

“All my life, since I was a child, I loved looking at photos, and my dad got me a camera when I was a young girl. And I photographed everything,” Beck said.

For the last 25 years, Charity has spent her life as a photographer, traveling the world taking pictures for some of the biggest magazines in the country.

“I love catching people’s beautiful moments,” she says.

She focuses on the beauty of life, and those uplifting moments that can turn a bad day into a good one. Charity decided to take that passion and start a print and online magazine publication called Positive Impact

“I feel like I want to inspire myself and others, and educate people, instead of hearing about the problems are the negative slant on being a human being,” Charity said.

Charity is looking to change minds by focusing on solutions instead of problems.

“We want our readers to feel inspired, to want to get up and do something or make a call or do some action,” she says.

Marci Wise has been with the magazine from the beginning.

“I worked in traditional journalism for many, many years. You know a lot of that news is so negative, when I heard about Positive Impact magazine, I had to be a part of that,” Wise said.

“It’s more than a magazine. It’s a membership for a movement for change,” Charity says.

A change that she hopes will transform this world into a peaceful and positive place.
