It has been a long journey for Trish Holder, who acted as the LEED project manager throughout the process. The Holder-Raines couple registered the home for LEED certification in October 2008 while it was under construction. They have been living in the home with their two children since it was completed in January 2009.

“We’ve been pacing ourselves,” joked Holder, a professional writer and marketing consultant for the commercial HVAC industry. “LEED certification was always a goal, but not necessarily a priority. Work, kids, and life had a way of taking precedence.”

The Challenges of Becoming LEED Certified

Part of Holder’s goal included being the first single family home to be LEED certified in the Piedmont Triad, an area that includes three of North Carolina’s major cities, Greensboro, High Point, and Winston Salem. Holder never dreamed that after four years they would still manage to be first, but a prevailing lack of consumer awareness about LEED and a weak construction market helped to hold their place in line.

Even if the awareness was there, few builders or homeowners are up for what is arguably the toughest green building standard out there. In 2008 when the Holder-Raines family began building the Greenspiration Home, the process was even more challenging. Few builders, much less sub-contractors, had even heard of the USGBC or LEED certification. That made finding suitable, enthusiastic partners for the project difficult.

LEED certification requires the involvement of multiple parties who take on key roles in the certification process. This includes an accredited Green Rater who has direct exposure to the project and a LEED for Homes Provider organization that serves as the liaison between the Green Rater and the USGBC to make sure all documentation is in certifiable order.

“Four years ago, these entities were few and far between, and those that had been approved for the practice where just getting their ‘LEED-Legs’ so-to-speak,” said Holder. “It made for a lot of missteps along the way. We’d think we understood a strategy, only to find out that we didn’t do one little thing right and we’d have to redo it in order to get the LEED points. That was frustrating, and in some cases expensive.”

Green Building: From One Homeowner to Another

While Holder frequently put LEED certification on the backburner, developing Greenspiration Home into an educational resource for homeowners became a high priority – if not an obsession. Over the last few years she has given hundreds of people personally guided tours of her home, speaking candidly about her experiences building green, both good and bad. She has also spoken at numerous events including the National Association of Environmental Law Societies (NAELS) Conference hosted by Vermont Law School. But most of her energy has been poured into www.greenspirationhome.com, an online publication she and her husband created to help homeowners navigate the process of building or renovating green.

“It’s like Better Homes & Gardens, only more technical and without the recipes,” said Holder.

Content includes anecdotal lessons about everything from a home’s heating and cooling system to sustainable floor coverings. Informed guest bloggers write about their own personal green building and renovating experiences. The site gets thousands of visitors each month, many of whom return again and again.

“We get great feedback – especially from women who appreciate the fact that we are giving them real information, not just fluff. But we’re doing it in a manner they can relate to. That’s something no one has ever done before.”

It is a fitting distinction given that the LEED certification process of the Greenspiration Home was instigated and driven by the actual homeowner.

“Getting LEED certified is gratifying because we worked so hard to get here. But this house, and all we have done with it to educate consumers, far exceeds what will be inscribed on a plaque,” said Holder.

The LEED for Homes certification program provides the framework for independent, third-party verification that a particular home complies with the LEED for Homes Green Building Rating System as developed by the US Green Building Council. Greenspiration Home is the first single-family home to achieve LEED certification in Greensboro, NC.

From attempting suicide twice before the age of 19, to becoming a teenage mom, to coping with grief – many of today’s business women have been through all that life can throw at them, yet they still overcame their problems to become a success. Now they want to share their stories and hear yours to help you succeed.
Los Angeles, California – Marianne Emma Jeff is not what you’d expect her to be. The owner of the Women’s Business Momentum Center tried to kill herself twice before she was 19 and was an alcoholic until she turned 40. Now, this smart and professional woman runs a center to help women starting their own businesses.

She always thought her struggle had been unique, until she attended a writer’s workshop ran by Lisa Fugard, a celebrated Hay House author. In this workshop people had to complete the sentences: “I used to …” and “And now I…” After listening to these other women’s tales, Marianne realized what a powerful motivational tool such stories would be for the many women in Pasadena who are starting their own businesses.

“The fact is that women setting up in business are the largest sector of overall new business owners,” says Marianne.

Continuing, “but women starting up in business face more hurdles than men; the key ones being self-doubt and lack of support. This is why I set up the Women’s Business Momentum Center, to help women to build or expand their business and transform their ideas into vision, action and profitability.”

Following her experience at Lisa Fugard’s workshop, Marianne came up with the idea of running the “Her Story” event. It’s a unique opportunity for local women to come together, to be inspired, to connect and to feel heard.

“I invited Lisa Fugard and nineteen other women with stories to come and share their stories with other women starting out in business. They will share their success stories by using “I used to…” “And now I…” For women, storytelling and having a strong support community is essential for them to thrive. The power of hearing your own story through the mouths of other women and knowing you are not in this alone is priceless” adds Marianne.

The Her Story event will run on May 31st from 12 noon to 8pm at Women’s City Club in Pasadena. Attendees will have a chance to listen to others’ stories, to ask the panelists questions and start to work on stories of their own.

“We are anticipating around 100 attendees and think that tickets for the event will soon sell out,” said Marianne.

She continued: “Although this is a full day event, women can attend any part of the program depending on their availability and still enjoy the benefits of connection, inspiration and motivation.”

Tickets for the event can be purchased here.

The Women’s Business Momentum Center was set up in 2005 by Marianne Emma Jeff to help women to succeed in business. The Women’s Business Momentum Center (WBMC) is designed to help professional women to build or expand their business and transform their ideas into vision, action and profitability.

2012 TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES HEINEKEN AUDIENCE AWARD WINNERS – ANY DAY NOW AND BURN

New York, NY [April 28, 2012] – The 11th annual Tribeca Film Festival (TFF), co-founded by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff, and presented by founding sponsor American Express, announced the winners of the two Heineken Audience Awards tonight at the wrap party in New York City. This year for the first time two awards—one for narrative and one for documentary—were given to the audience choices for the best films. Any Day Now, directed by Travis Fine, was chosen to receive the Narrative award and BURN, directed by Tom Putnam and Brenna Sanchez, was chosen for the Documentary award. Each award comes with a cash prize of $25,000. Additionally as part of the Tribeca Film Festival Artists Awards program, Any Day Now receives the sculpture Ascension courtesy of Nathan Sawaya and BURN receives Jacobs #16 “Blue Skies” courtesy of Peter Dayton & Winston Wächter Fine Art.

“It’s gratifying to see audiences respond so overwhelmingly to these world premiere films,” said Nancy Schafer, Executive Director of the Tribeca Film Festival. “Both films strike uplifting and hopeful notes, and we look forward to them continuing to garner strong audience reaction long after the Festival is over.”

Throughout the Festival, which kicked off on April 18, audiences have been able to vote for the Heineken Audience Awards by completing nomination ballots upon exiting screenings of TFF films. Films in the World Narrative Competition, World Documentary Competition, Viewpoints, Spotlight and Cinemania sections were eligible.

Any Day Now begins when aspiring singer Rudy (Alan Cumming) pounds on the door to discover his neighbor’s son Marco, a teenager with Down syndrome, left alone by his drug addicted mother with only the blaring stereo to keep him company. Family Services takes Marco, but days later Rudy sees him on the street and brings him home, where Rudy and his closeted district attorney partner Paul (Garret Dillahunt) become the stable family environment Marco has never had. But when authorities discover Rudy and Paul are gay, the men must battle a biased legal system to adopt the child they have come to love as their own. Set in 1970s Los Angeles and inspired by a true story, Any Day Now is a poignant and occasionally incendiary drama from TFF alum Travis Fine (The Space Between) that addresses gay adoption rights issues that are as relevant today as they were nearly 40 years ago. Augmenting the touching performances from Cumming and Dillahunt is Isaac Leyva, who offers a subtle yet impactful performance as a boy who inspires those around him to fight for what is right when no one else will. Cumming, Dillahunt and Leyva received a standing ovation for their performances at the premiere.

“We had a wonderful experience here two years ago,” said Fine. “We are absolutely thrilled and honored that audiences responded so strongly.”

BURN, executive produced by Denis Leary, introduces audiences to the men and women charged with saving Detroit, the once-roaring city that many have left for dead. With vast stretches of forsaken buildings left as kindling, the highest arson rate in the country, and a budget crisis of epic proportions, the city turns to new Fire Commissioner Donald Austin to shake up the system with hard-line decisions and drastic, often controversial measures. Cautiously regarded by the department as a bombastic outsider, the Detroit native sets out to demonstrate his commitment to helping his hometown rise from the ashes. Many of the film’s screenings at TFF were attended by members of the DFD and received standing ovations.

“We were told time and time again that there is no audience for a film about firefighters,” said Sanchez. Added Putnam, “We are so grateful for this honor and we hope it will help raise the profile of the film and let people know what’s going on in Detroit and across this country.”

Any Day Now will screen tomorrow (Sunday, April 29) at 12 p.m. and 9 p.m. and BURN at 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at Clearview Cinemas Chelsea, as will the rest of the films that won awards at the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival. Specific times for the other films are available on the Festival website, www.tribecafilm.com. All other 2012 TFF award winners were announced previously at an awards show on Thursday, April 26, 2012.

Los Angeles (April 27, 2012) – The Bud Light Lime Surf Series (BLLSS) owned and operated by IMG has announced Fin-S will be the Official Fin Sponsor in 2012. Fin-S, pronounced “fi-ness”, was built by the two Posner brothers: The WQS surfer, Scott, and the engineer, Chad. The product was developed with one simple question in mind, “What can we do to bring surfing to the next level?”

“We are super stoked to be launching Fin-S with the Bud Light Lime Surf Series. Not only are our team riders in the series, but this year they’ll be able to demo them at the stops.” Said Scott Posner, Fin-S Founder. Fin-S team riders include Kekoa Bacalso, Joel Centeio and Sean Moody who are all confirmed for the BLLSS Oceanside Invitational.

Knowing that the current fin systems are time consuming and tedious to use, the Posner’s sought to make it better. Years of research and development coupled with the help of pros and top shapers around the globe led to something simply ground-breaking. They created a unique tool-less fin system which utilizes their patented SpringLock™ technology. Surfers are no longer bound to fin keys or tools, Fin-S is fast, easy to use, durable, and maintains a tight connection to the board. This enables a confident experience in any surf condition. For more information visit Fin-s.com or the Fin-S Facebook Page.

About Bud Light Lime Surf Series

The Bud Light Lime Surf Series is an ASP North America Specialty event and strives to foster a participant-influenced competition structure. Its unorthodox format brings together participants from various surf genres around the globe, offering them the chance to compete at least twice before cuts are made following the second round. Additionally, each surfer’s top-two scores are counted, regardless of which heat they competed in during opening rounds, allowing them to focus on bettering their own scores as opposed to competing directly against one another.

The BLLSS takes a unique approach to the “professional” surf contest with an equal focus on competition, athlete/spectator experience and providing a relaxed atmosphere. Athletes weigh in on contest formats, heat line ups, and scheduling under the guidance of Benji Weatherley a fellow surfer, participant, and the BLLSS Contest Director. The Bud Light Lime Surf Series launched in 2011 with two events on the California coast, bringing together 32 top men and eight women to compete for more than $100,000 in total prize purse. Surfline is the Official Forecaster of the Bud Light Lime Surf Series and will host highlights of the contest on www.Surfline.com. For more information visit the Bud Light Lime Surf Series Facebook Page or go to www.BudLightLimeSurfSeries.com.

An exceptional work of vérité filmmaking, “Special Flight” forces us to confront the contradictions of humane incarceration.”

A Special Jury Award was also presented to “The Law in These Parts (Shilton Ha’Chok),” directed by Ra’anan Alexandrowicz, a meticulously constructed exploration of the complex military laws imposed by Israel on citizens in the occupied territories.
